If you’ve found yourself drifting off during breathwork sessions, you’re not alone. Many practitioners experience this phenomenon, and the reasons go beyond your sleep quality.
Breathwork has been brough to the West from Eastern and Shamanic traditions, were it has been used to reach alter states of consciousness and facilitate spiritual journeys.
Breathwork, a practice brought to the West from Eastern and shamanic traditions, has long been used to reach altered states of consciousness and support spiritual journeys. Over time, modern approaches such as Holotropic Breathwork and Rebirthing have evolved, designed to activate the nervous system and access non-ordinary states of consciousness, making it possible to release suppressed emotions and trauma. These techniques can be incredibly powerful, helping us reconnect with parts of ourselves that have been frozen in time when we didn’t have the tools to process difficult experiences (learn more on Breathwork & the Nervous System).
As we continue our healing journeys, many of us have already begun the process of awakening. We’ve learned to move from states of numbness or freeze to activation—reclaiming our power and becoming aware of what has always been within us. However, for those of us who have already tapped into this awareness, constantly activating the nervous system can sometimes feel overwhelming. Our bodies, already full of emotions waiting to be processed, may become overstimulated. And when that charge becomes too high, what happens? Our bodies slip back into freeze mode, shutting down, numbing out, or even falling asleep. Sound familiar?
In such moments, what we need isn't more activation; we need regulation. We need spaces where we can slow down, feel safe, and simply be. We need to witness ourselves, process gently, and integrate what we have already uncovered. We need to know it’s safe to be awake. We need grounded practices - practices that allow us to feel what’s already here in a way that supports us. This is where somatic practices, like Somatic Breathwork, come into play.
Somatic Breathwork is a gentle yet transformative practice that uses intentional, deep breathing to connect the body and mind, allowing the release of stored emotions and physical tension. Rather than focusing on outer-body experiences or intense activation, Somatic Breathwork emphasizes feeling the body’s sensations in the present moment. It creates space for healing and self-awareness to arise from a state of regulation and grounded presence.
Through conscious connected breathing, blending both nose and mouth breathing, Somatic Breathwork helps balance the nervous system. It’s a flow between gentle activation and relaxation, opening space for you to feel in a safe and supported way. Movement, sound, and self-inquiry are also integrated into the practice, encouraging a full range of expression and a deeper connection to your body.
This practice is especially valuable for those who tend to dissociate or fall asleep during more intense breathwork practices. By grounding the body and focusing on regulation, you stay connected to the present moment and allow healing to happen at your own pace—without overwhelm.
If you’ve ever found yourself drifting off or feeling disconnected during breathwork, Somatic Breathwork might offer the grounded support you need. It allows you to access deep emotional layers while staying present and in tune with your body. It allows for deep emotional release and self-discovery, while keeping you fully present in your body. Whether you’re already on a healing journey or simply curious about exploring new ways to connect with yourself, this gentle practice opens a safe space for you to breathe, feel, and integrate.
